PRIMARY

Our primary curriculum is thoughtfully designed to ignite a lifelong love for learning, cultivating curiosity about the world and a genuine passion for education. By seamlessly integrating the esteemed Cambridge Primary programme into our core subjects, we’ve woven a tapestry of enrichment that goes beyond, with a dedicated focus on the pillars of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental (SEE)

Our mission is clear: not only to nurture essential learning skills but also to build strong character, empowering our primary students to unearth their self-worth and boldly declare, "This is Who I Am!" as they embark on their journey with us. Let's delve into the intricate details of our vibrant primary curriculum, carefully divided across six enriching areas:

Embarking on the journey to multilingual mastery is a cornerstone of our program, igniting early sparks of linguistic brilliance. Language, a conduit for effective communication, empowers students to articulate thoughts with profound assurance. At the heart of our curriculum lies English, seamlessly woven into every facet, nurturing fluency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. We extend a captivating invitation for students to delve into the realm of Mandarin or Portuguese as foreign languages, embracing an exceptional international curriculum.

Our Mandarin curriculum is built upon the esteemed Youth Chinese Test (YCT) and HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test – Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) curriculum, fostering a robust foundation in this vital language. Likewise, our Portuguese program is dedicated to imparting the intricacies of European Portuguese, enriching students with a diverse linguistic palette.

Recognizing the importance of bridging connections within the Timorese community, we ensure that all students are introduced to fundamental conversational Tetum language skills and reading. This thoughtful approach not only embraces our local context but also opens doors to a wider world of cultural exchange and understanding.

We kindle a lifelong curiosity for the natural world through our dynamic science curriculum. This nurtures curiosity, scientific inquiry, and practical skills, equipping students to unravel the mysteries of their environment. In tandem, mathematics, a cornerstone of analytical thinking, is cultivated using the renowned Cambridge Primary programme. This approach empowers students to grasp principles, patterns, systems, functions, and relationships holistically. Our curriculum encourages critical thinking, evidential reasoning, and the pursuit of connections between diverse concepts, fostering a higher order of thought.

In today’s data-driven landscape, digital competence is paramount. While unfamiliar to many parents, technology is second nature to our students. We instill responsible digital skills, nurturing positive contributions to the tech world. From coding to computational thinking, our primary students embark on a journey of Digital Literacy and Computing, seamlessly continuing into secondary education. Imagine the exciting potential of our students becoming future computer scientists, driving innovation on local and global stages!

Art and music provide limitless avenues for self-expression. Our fine arts curriculum is a canvas for creativity, sparking imagination and honing transferable skills. Through mediums like painting, printmaking, model crafting, and digital art, students evolve into critical thinkers with a keen sense of reflection. Communication extends beyond words, encompassing visual arts and harmonious melodies. Whether through traditional subjects or creative outlets, each child finds their niche. Musical exploration includes playing instruments like the recorder, melodica, and traditional Timorese musical instruments, complemented by basic musical notation, singing, and dance.

Our curriculum radiates as a beacon of sustainability education. As young learners unlock their potential, they are skillfully guided through SEE topics, presenting pragmatic solutions to global challenges. This transformative journey takes shape within our Global Perspective subject and through engaging weekly Ted Talk sessions, where students are encouraged to eloquently voice their viewpoints before their peers. Moving beyond this, we foster a deep understanding of Asian and European cultures through our Cultural Studies subject, offering a dual opportunity to explore the intricacies of these regions while imbibing valuable knowledge. With an overarching global perspective and an ever-expanding growth mindset, we embolden students to wholeheartedly welcome diversity, amplify empathy, and resoundingly declare, “This is Who I Am!” to the world.

Physical and mental well-being unite through sports, a cornerstone of our balanced curriculum. At Pelican Grammar, primary students not only learn fundamental physical movements but also cultivate essential skills through a diverse range of sports, including gymnastics, running, jazzminton, futsal, pickleball, and dodgeball. Our aim is to nurture a passion for sports and foster an appreciation for physical education’s role in a healthy, active lifestyle.
